It is traditional for the school musical year to end with Jazz on a Summer’s Evening, a lively celebration of music in a wide variety of popular styles - not only jazz, but also pop, rock, Latin American music and show songs.
The evening began in the Senior School Hall with performances from the Year 7 and 8 Jazz Ensemble, Concert Strings, Brass Ensemble, Big Band, a saxophone quartet, a string quartet and a few solos, all performed to a large and enthusiastic audience.
We were fortunate that the concert coincided with the hottest day of the year so far, allowing the second half to proceed as planned outside. The Activity Space and canopy area provide the perfect venue for a relaxed style of performance, and the audience of parents and students, now seated on a mixture of floor cushions, chairs and cafe tables, enjoyed refreshments while the music continued. Soloists and small groups from every single year group in the Senior School and Sixth Form performed an incredible twenty items, all cheered to the rafters by their supporters on the floor cushions! Some students were performing in this concert for the first time, and some for the last time - such is the nature of a music department which aims to provide opportunities for all.
