The TeenTech Awards are for UK students from ages 11-16 (Years 7 to 11) and ages 16-19 (Years 12 to 13) working in teams of up to three to look at problems large and small to see if they can find a better way of doing things.
Teen Tech presents a wonderful and powerful opportunity to develop students' potential and showcase qualities which are appreciated by both employers and further education. The best projects submitted in April each year go forward to the TeenTech Awards Final for judging and the winning school in each category receives a cash prize. The final normally takes place towards the end of June at either the Royal Society or the Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Stephen Perse has had students in the finals for the last four years and have twice had winning entries. The cash prize normally awarded to the school has been donated back to the organisation to support their work in disadvantaged areas.
This year four Stephen Perse students entered projects, developing a diverse range of products.
Molly R in Year 7 has spent the year developing scented balms to help students with anxiety. Her project was praised by the judges and she will continue working with GSK (Glaxo Klein Smith) to improve the project for entry next year.
Arisha S in Year 12 has been developing a technique to produce bioplastic from algae. Her project was described as a ‘brilliant environmental project’ by the judges.
Two students from Year 9, Julie P and Mouboni D, have been investigating the possibility of developing a potted plant for growth in classrooms that will not spill water or soil and will need minimal care from the students. To develop their idea they have had support from both the Science department and the Design Engineering department as well as from Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS). The judges were very impressed by their project and in June 2023 they will represent the school at the finals in London.
